Martha, Martha

Something I struggle with the most is resting. Yes, that’s right I do not like to sit and do nothing.

The hardest thing for me to do is sit and relax.

I am a Type A personality.

Even as I write this I am constantly thinking about 20 other things I could or should be doing.

The struggle is real.

At times I am Mary and Martha all at once!

If you have never met Mary or Martha well let me introduce you to their story.

(The story of Mary and Martha can be found in Luke 10:38-42)

The story begins as Jesus and his disciples were traveling, a woman named Martha allowed Jesus to come into her home. Jesus rested in their home and Martha began cleaning the house and preparing food for Jesus to eat. Martha also had a sister named Mary, who sat at the feet of Jesus.

Martha watched as her sister Mary sat and listened to Jesus as he spoke. She began to worry if she would get everything done in time. She began to worry about what Jesus would think about the food. She looked angrily at her sister.

Why is she not helping me? Why isn’t Jesus telling her to help me? Doesn’t Mary know I cannot do this all on my own?

Martha, grunted and said, “Jesus, do you not care that my sister is not helping me with all this work?”

Martha glared at her sister, but Jesus answered calmly, “Martha, Martha, you are so busy worrying about what as to be done when only one thing is important. Mary has chosen the better thing and it will not be taken from her.”

Mary and Martha were two completely different people.

Mary wanted to know her savior more. She yearned to hear his word and to rest at his feet.

Martha was too busy trying to make sure everything was perfect to listen to his words. She worried too much about what her sister was NOT doing to stop and see that her Savior was calling her to rest.

Who do you most relate to when Jesus is calling? Mary or Martha?

When Jesus calls you to rest, do you reply “Yes, Lord” and sit at his feet listening to his every word. Or do you say “Wait, I’m not ready. Give me another hour and then I’ll be ready” because you feel as though you have not prepared yourself enough for him?

Jesus does not call us to be perfect. He does not want us to worry about anything when he speaks to us.

He wants us to rest in him. b8933d05f80010d6a66892c8f08ac729

There are times when Jesus says, “Stop worrying about what needs to be done, and rest in Me. I am here for you!”

When those moments come, remember that Jesus doesn’t need you to be perfect or prepared for Him. He just wants to be with you.

You are his and He is yours.

Rest in Jesus.
